Welcome to the workshop

The Johannesburg Pen Co workshop is a place of industry and learning, where young men learn the importance of working safely and creatively.

How are our pens made?

Each JPC pen starts with a blank piece of wood, roughly the length of your finished pen. Depending on the pen model, we'll cut this in two. A central hole is bored through each piece, into which a brass barrel is fitted. Maintaining the orientation for attractive and continuous grain, the pieces are mounted onto a lathe, where they are hand-turned to the desired pen profile. Once this is achieved, a series of sanding is completed, to produce variously a woody rough texture, or a smooth polish. These parts are then paired with a selection of hardwares, and pressed carefully into the finished product.
